We are no longer Frazier Family of Four...

We are the Frazier Family of Five....
(and yes, the blog name will soon be changing!!)

 Elijah passed his hearing test

Our family is so excited for his arrival! Here's the extended story of his birth for those that are interested:

We arrived at Johnson City Medical Center at 6:00am on 3/15/12 for a scheduled induction. Kim was officially 39 weeks and 1 day. For various reasons the doctor thought it would be best to schedule the delivery at this time instead of going to full term or beyond. By 7:00 am we were in the room taking a few final belly pictures and meeting with the anesthesiologist about pain management options. Soon after we met Desiree who would be our primary nurse up through the delivery. After another hour or so of waiting and preparations, Terri (Kim's mom) and Dr. McCarthy arrived around 8-8:30am. Since Kim wasn't much more than 2-3cm dilated the decision was made to take things slow and postpone breaking her water to start labor until 12:00 pm.

With some extra time on our hands, Kim was given some "food" (apple juice, jello, and chicken broth) while Terri and Andy went to the cafeteria for a late breakfast around 10:00 am. Contractions were steady for the next 2 hours but relatively mild until Kim's water was broken. After that contractions began to increase in strength and frequency coming every 1-2 minutes from roughly 2:00 pm -3:00 pm. Kim spent some time standing and walking to relieve some of the pain. Terri and Andy helped as able by massaging her back. Then just before 3:00 pm it was "show time." :-)

As the pain increased and was becoming more frequent, Kim elected to try some minor IV pain medication to take some of "the edge" off the contractions. We think it was called "fentanyl," which helped some but made her feel nauseous. An additional medication was then given to relive the nausea and soon after that just a few minutes before 3:00 pm the contractions were coming hard and Kim was ready to push. The nurse told her to do her best not to push just yet because our doctor was on the floor helping to deliver another baby! Kim did great at holding off while other preparations were made to deliver the baby.

At almost 3:00 pm exactly Dr. McCarthy made it in for the final delivery preparations and gave Kim the green light to start pushing. Within maybe 2 pushes we could already see the head, and by 3:04 pm Elijah was out! Terri got to watch it all happen while Andy stood by Kim offering a hand to squeeze and wiping her forehead. Andy cut the cord and Kim got to hold Elijah on her stomach for a couple minutes before he needed to be cleaned up, weighed, and measured.

Up until he was born we had not decided on a middle name. Relieved to learn it was indeed a boy (because we had no girl names picked out) Kim said, "Let's call him Elijah Samuel, he looks like a Samuel." Unknown to Kim, Andy was also planning to say Samuel for a middle name if Kim passed on the decision to him. Here is some of the reasons behind the name we chose for our son.

Elijah is Hebrew for "My God is the Lord" and our boy is named after the Old Testament prophet who proclaimed that boldly with his life. He is most remembered for a showdown with the false prophets of Baal in which he mocked their worship of a false god and demonstrated the power of the true God by praying that God would burn up an altar that he had soaked with water. He is also one of the only people in the Bible that never experienced death as 2 Kings 2:11 says "Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind."

Samuel was the final judge of Israel who led the people humbly and faithfully through times of great change. He was born to Hannah who prayed so intensely for a baby that she appeared to be drunk to Eli (the priest of that day)! Samuel was born after Hannah promised to dedicate him to serve God with his life. He grew up in the temple and later after many years of faithful service he appointed both Saul and David as the first kings of Israel. His life and story is one of Andy's favorite of the Bible.

We hope and pray that our son will learn from the positive examples of these men as he grows into the man he was created to be. We love him already for who he is and praise God for entrusting this precious life to our care.

Thanks for celebrating with us another one of God's gifts to our family, Elijah Samuel!

It's a Real Nursery

We have officially finished the nursery!!!

...The crib is set up...

(thanks to my dad and Kim buying the crib and my mom, Aunt Gail, and Gramie buying all the bedding/accessories),

...clothes are put away...

(thanks to my friends Mendy and Janie for the dresser!),

...and all the painting has been done or rather finished...

{months ago we moved our bedroom downstairs, Noah to our bedroom because bunk beds fit better without being in front of a window, and then made his old room a nursery, whew!}

...the room had been waiting for a year for the border to be finished with blue and the trim/doors/window with white.

I even have the bassinet/pack-n-play/changing table combo set up downstairs in our room with diapers, bibs, blankets, etc.

Now all we're waiting on is baby boy and we're set! ;-) He is still due on March 20, but since Noah came 10 days early, my doctor believes this baby will come early.

::crossing my fingers::

And I have a weird confession to make:
sometimes I just sit in the nursery.
No reason I can explain, just love to sit in my office, um, rocking chair!

Surprises and Showers

A month+ ago, I was asked if Lori and Katie (friends from church) could "take over" the nursery and throw us a shower. Well, since I had no plans for the nursery...baby #3, no energy, no plans...um, yes please!! :-) They asked if an owl theme would be okay...again, yes, that would be adorable!! And they wanted to make the shower a surprise. E.x.c.e.l.l.e.n.t.!!!!

Weeks later, I started pestering Andy for clues of when would the shower be...today, tomorrow, next week? Then he planned a "Family Outing" to our local museum. And did not put any info online. Which seemed so obvious!! If you know Andy, he is the geek of the family (and of many of our friends) and every event goes on Facebook. So obviously the surprise would be Saturday morning.

Saturday came and we went to the museum, (shower must be tomorrow I thought) ...we had fun, and had a weird experience: my friend Lisa was attacked by two pigeons. Two birds literally collided into her back and feathers flew everywhere!! She was fine, but it was just really strange.

Then we went home and: S...U...R...P...R...I...S...E!!!

There were so many adorable owl decorations: owl balloons, an owl cake...to eat, and a diaper cake, owls on a tree...

Katie made a favorite of mine: a diaper cake!!!

Diana made this adorable cake

And it was tasty too!!!

My helper Lori helping me keep track!

I started out with several helpers...all the "big" kids that were there, Hannah, Noah, Ella, Matthew, and Marlie...they soon disappeared, but a few came back at the end!

My friend Lori really wants this boy to be named after her...even if it's the guys name from Little Women!!

The kids had their own table...colors and all!!

This is called a "Pee-pee Teepee"
Need I say more? ;-)

Having a little fun with my friend Lisa who was trying so hard to keep things picked up and fold the paper...

I just couldn't help myself!

The gift table...yes, I unwrapped it all! ;-)

And when we came home I took a nap and this is the decoration I woke up to...

My kids used some stickers and tape to hang up the balloons ;-)

Thank you to all who came out and showered Elijah Something with lots of gifts, we certainly appreciate the support and love we received.

'Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic

School Days, school days....dear old golden rule days....

Her Snowflake
(from previous blog)

His Snowflake
Now don't get used to this....I won't be blogging everyday...or week, especially when baby comes!!! (or maybe I'll do this more often since it will only take an hour or less instead of the typical 3 hours+)

I just wanted to share about some school days: some Reading and Writing and Arithmetic, not to mention Art, music, and more!!

This is the "More!!"
We celebrated 100 days of school this week: with brownies (what else?) that said  "100", a song about 100 days and a few other 100 day things. It's actually been over 100, but we didn't count each and every day in our counting jar!! (Oops...don't tell)

Also, at Noah's school, his teacher was bragging to me about him and numbers...how in class she would say a number and then ask for a number higher or lower. She was intrigued by watching Noah's mind working and then he'd throw out some random, huge number! (Have I mentioned how much we love this teacher?? We have been blessed by her teaching Noah the same way we were last year with Hannah's teacher!!) The day before he was measuring things (yes, with a real measuring tape!!) and would make up some crazy number like 100-million-thousand-kajillion-49-8. I don't know whether he will be a math whiz and find some new, huge number or become an architect like Andy wanted to be when he was in high school. Hannah was also measuring for a little bit, but was singing while doing so!

Now I have to talk about my current little homeschooler...we have been studying "World's Famous Artists" and looking at Picasso for the past 2 weeks (about 2x/week). Today's lesson Hannah was to pick out one of his paintings and copy it, however she wanted...and I was to make sure she knew it wouldn't be exact, which was smart on the author's advice because my little perfectionist might get annoyed bothered upset that it didn't turn out right. She actually ended up picking a picture of his friend whom Picasso painted...not even what he painted!

You can also see what letter we are learning!
Another thing we did today was creative, uh, drawing/coloring/cutting! I put some paper, crayons, scissors, and stickers in one of her workboxes without directions and this is one of the things she made:

It's a girl who is excited about her first Christmas!! She apparently is old enough to not be a baby, but hasn't had Christmas' before...she is very happy and this is what she would look like according to Hannah:

Another day, I put in the box some things to decorate a Barbie dress, which was a Christmas gift from Papa & Kim Fleming....

I guess that's about all I have to say about my budding artist!!
